Portofino, approximately 40 mins from Genoa's Cristoforo Columbus airport, is a small but exquisitely beautiful and stylish village on the coast of Liguria, Italy's smallest region. The colour-washed houses are a delight with the backdrop of the green hills and blue waters. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were frequent visitors and now the rich and famous are catered for by the designer boutiques, lavish hotels and fabulous restaurants and bars.<br /><br />The magic of Portofino is of course always to be seen, but a visit in the spring or early autumn is wonderful as many of the fashionistas do not arrive until high summer. Best seats in the fabulous restaurants overlooking the harbour can be had with rather more ease, and the sun warmed Paraggi bay is still inviting. The village is car free but out of season parking for your luxury rental car can be found close to the village and many of the luxury hotels on the hillside above the harbour have private parking facilities.<br /><br />If you wish to visit Portofino only for the day, then a stay in the still fashionable but quieter town of Santa Margherita is a good option. There is a regular ferry service to Portofino and the town is car friendly. The roads in the area tend to be narrow and steep but the views are truly wonderful and the ride exhilerating!
